Only Change Is Unchangable

In a few more weeks to come, the year 2015 will come to an end. This will also marks my 14.5 years of working life, including two years away from my home country and over a dozen trips intermittently during the sum of the period. I have been formal staff in three institutions and service contracts staff in over dozen of local and international organisations. With the three institutions, i experience change process in different ways.

The first org., i left the organisation when the big wave of change arrived. It was the first and most inspiring and nurturing space i experience and in many ways i didnt embrace change that was coming the way. I later joined the process as governance committee and therefore not directly experirnced it from a staff member point of view. At the second org., change came at a slower pace and it was quite selective. I also not really experienced it from staff member point of view.

This is my second year as staff member and yet the big drastic wave of change is coming... and i want to observe this process from an insider, a staff member, an active participant.

In one reads a proposal of any development project closely and carefully, one woulse observe that the end goal of the project is to bring change, "desired positive change".

However, in our real life setting, any type of change is embraced is extreme caustion. At my time as student, i remember reading book explaining how people tends to resist change at first place for fear of the unknown event yet to occured. And this resistance is exacebated by the associated factors such as unclear process, not able to access to sufficient information regarding change plan, non-transparency and accountability, ownership and space for dialogue about the chance process itself.

I observe much of the u settled feeling when management commenced discussing the change process.

People fear of losing their jobs,

People fears of losing their stable incomes,

People fear of being manipulated by the token process and procedure set up in the name of bringing about change,

People fear of non transparency and accountability,

People fear of the unforeseen consequences if they question, ask, acquire responses from their patron, their boss, their manager, their senior,

They fear they  may be targeted by the lrocess if they act to demand justice,

Yet every single day, every single phone call, email, meeting, we all put our energy into our work so that by the end of the day we would bri g about change to the way we work, the wY we are treated, the way we access education, healthcare services, justices, and so on.

We uphold key principles and core values that guide our code of  condcut, our believe, our approach to work, our strategy  our advocacy, our way of working to give us the identity of who we are and how we do thing...

EQUITY

EQUALITY

FAIRNESS

OPENNESS

TRANSPARENCY

ACCOUNTABILITY

PARTICIPATION

OWNERSHIP

DEMOCRACY

HUMAN RIGHTS

WORKER RIGHTS

COLLECTIVE RIGHT

CHANGE

These principles and core value become meaningless, paper-based, a piece of document if we just preach it for other to do and we dont do it ourselves.

If we do  not act becuase now we are not affected by the situation

If we stay silent because we hope someone else will speak and we will also be benefiting

We will be just fine with the current and soon-to-come situation

If we do not exercise our own talk who will?

If we dont ask now when will we ask?

If we do not have a dialogue when will our query be cleared?

If we ourselves is not the change agent, within our own self, our own home, our own work place, our own community, our own country, do we hope that other people wi,l bring about  change that we aspire to see?

There is no time that we are ready to change but we change to be ready!
